Hittite King

A Hittite king wearing initiatory clothes

On his head there is the helmet of Teshub, the Hittite Storm God, which can be seen on rock-reliefs from Anatolia, and in his hand there is a symbol of power. The fight of Teshub and Illuyanka, the Snake of Chaos, was re-enacted during Purulli (celebration on New Year’s Day). According to the Hittite Creation myth (Genesis), Illuyanka first defeats the Storm God, who can only overpower the snake later, with the help of his son born from a mortal woman.
